Imagine having difficulty finding the means to provide 1 or 2 extra meals for your child daily because their school is closed due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Now imagine you have 9 children… all at risk first- time teenage mothers. That is the reality of Nadia Williams, Administrator of Mary’s Child, an apostolate of Mustard Seed Communities. Designed in 1992 the home which was relocated to 3 Golding Avenue in 2018, has maintained its mission to provide a secure environment for these vulnerable pregnant teens and their babies while ensuring their educational, emotional and spiritual needs are met. On May 11, 2020 the Valda Hope Foundation family donated over $77,000 JMD worth of food, cleaning supplies and personal effects ranging from formula and diapers for the home’s 10 infants, to flour and chicken for the 9 new mothers to help cushion the increased demand. “Being a teen mom is tough but you can still achieve what you have always desired!” These penned simple but powerful words were the VHF family’s message to the 9 young mothers at Mary’s Child on Mothers’ Day 2020. They may be vulnerable but these young ladies are more importantly strong, resilient, beautiful and full of promise! We salute you for rising above your challenges and keeping your head held high! The nurses, house mothers and administrators were certainly not forgotten and also honoured! We thank you for your service to Jamaica!

Home schooling is riddled with challenges. From parents trying to juggle working from home alongside chores, meals and new age curriculums, to the kids trying to maintain focus with new routines as well as discipline in their once ‘free’ space. Access to a computer and the information superhighway poses even bigger challenges for many Jamaicans especially those unable to afford electronics or the monthly internet bills. The Mary’s Child home once had a fully operational computer lab however in recent times only 4 systems were well functioning and available for E-learning. The VHF team with the help of Mr. Franz Irons was able to restore function as well as provide internet capabilities to 7 more computers in the lab ensuring each young mother is able to use various educational platforms simultaneously!
